Acne scars are the result of damages to your skin structure by acne. These scars not only affect the appearance of your skin but may also hurt your self-esteem and the way you feel about yourself. Luckily, there are different types of treatment that you can use to remove most types of acne scars. One popular acne scar removal treatment is Microdermabrasion.
What is exactly microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion (also called Lunchtime Peel or Parisian Peel) is a popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure that is used to treat a number of skin problems including mild or recent acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, skin discolorations and sun damage. It is considered a safe procedure for all skin types and colours.
This cosmetic procedure is a light exfoliating technique that removes the damaged outermost layer of the skin by performing a light abrasion using a small wand-like tool that expels fine aluminium oxide or zinc oxide crystals onto the skin. These crystals loosen dead skin cells which are then removed by a small vacuum. Typically, the whole procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
Removing acne scars with microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is best used for mild or recent acne scars. In addition to dealing with acne scars, microdermabrasion can make your skin look and feel smoother, younger, fresher and brighter.
This procedure need to be repeated over a period of time to be effective. Typically, five or six dermabrasion treatments over a few months are recommended in the beginning followed by maintenance on a monthly basis.
It is important to note that microdermabrasion treatments won’t work for deeper acne scarring and Keloids. For those types of acne scars, there are other acne scar treatments that you can consider.
Treatment at home
Microdermabrasion is typically carried out in beauty salons and some spas. Each treatment typically costs anything from $100-$300.
A cheaper alternative is to use home microdermabrasion kits. These kits are only suitable for people with minor acne scarring problems. They are safe to use but it is best to seek advice from a dermatologist before you start using these kits.
